What you predict in the MLS game

Soccer is the only league on TrueLine Daily where a game can end level, and that changes every number: goals are scarce, the win chance has to leave room for a draw, and margins are measured in fractions of a goal.

Projected total

2–4.5 goals

The combined goals the matchup was projected to produce. Most MLS totals close between about 2.5 and 3.5 goals, so the slider hugs that range in quarter-goal steps — soccer totals really are set in quarters, like 2.75 and 3.25 — and landing within 0.25 of a goal counts as nailed.

Home win chance

0–100%

How likely the home team was to win outright. A draw counts against it, so this runs lower than in other sports: with roughly one game in four ending level, even a clear home favorite is often a 50–60% call, and an even game can be well under 40%.

Goal handicap

0–100%

How likely the favorite was to win by more than the goal handicap — usually a fraction of a goal, because soccer margins are so small. The handicap is set to split the game, so the answer sits near 50%; the skill is judging whether the favorite wins comfortably or scrapes it.

How a day plays out

1

Open the matchup

One real MLS game from earlier in the season, the same one for every player, with both teams' records as they stood that day. The result stays hidden — the point is your read, not your homework.

2

Make three predictions

Three guesses per number. After each one you're told whether the answer is higher or lower, so a miss still tells you something and you can close in.

3

Get scored against the close

When you finish, each number is scored 0–100 on how close you landed to where the market closed before the game. Your day's score is the average of the three.

Why you're scored against the closing number

Soccer is the lowest-scoring sport there is, which makes its results the noisiest. One deflection or one penalty call can flip a game a team dominated, so the final score is a poor measure of whose read was right.

The number the market settled on right before kickoff is the best public estimate of the matchup: travel, rotation and form are all in it. Scoring against it rewards a good read even when the ball bounced the wrong way.

It also makes MLS the most precise test on TrueLine Daily. With goals this scarce, a quarter of a goal on the total or a few points on the win chance is the whole difference between a good read and an average one.

MLS prediction game FAQ

What is the daily MLS prediction game?

It is a free once-a-day soccer game. You get one real MLS matchup from earlier in the season, with the result hidden, and predict three numbers about it — the projected goal total, the home team's chance to win outright, and the chance the favorite covers the goal handicap. Every player gets the same matchup, with three guesses per number and a higher-or-lower hint after each.

Is this sports betting?

No. There is no wagering, no deposit, and nothing to win but bragging rights. You are predicting numbers about a game that has already been played, to test how well you read it. You cannot win or lose money.

Why is the home win chance so low in the MLS game?

Because soccer has three results, not two. The home win chance only counts home wins — a draw is not a win — so it leaves room for the tie. That's why even a strong home favorite is often only a 50–60% call.

How many goals should I guess?

The slider runs 2 to 4.5 goals in quarter-goal steps. Most MLS games close between about 2.5 and 3.5; two attacking teams push it up, a defensive side or a heavily rotated lineup pulls it down.

How is my MLS score calculated?

Each of the three numbers is scored 0 to 100 on how close it lands to the closing number, and your day's score is the average of the three. Nailing a number on your first guess scores more than getting there on your third.

Do I need an account to play?

No. You can play as a guest straight away. Creating an account saves your history and streak across devices, and your guest progress carries over when you sign in.

Can I play yesterday's MLS game?

Yes, if it's recent: today and the 2 days before it stay open to everyone. Daily Plus opens the full archive of past slates, lets you play every league on the same day instead of one, and includes a streak repair each week.
