What you predict in the NHL game
Hockey is low-scoring and decided by fine margins, and its numbers show it: the total barely moves from game to game, and the margin market is a fixed line, the same every night.
Projected total
4.5–8 goalsThe combined goals the matchup was projected to produce. Nearly every NHL total closes at 6 or 6.5 goals, so the slider moves in 0.5-goal steps and only the exact number counts as nailed. With a range this tight, the whole question is whether a game leans high or low — and the goaltending matchup is usually what decides it.
Home win chance
0–100%How likely the home team was to win, including in overtime or a shootout — every NHL game ends with a winner. Like baseball, hockey has few lopsided games: a clear favorite is often only a 60–65% call.
Puck line
0–100%How likely the favorite was to win by more than 1.5 goals — that is, by two or more. So many NHL games are decided by one goal that this sits well below the win chance, and the empty net matters: a trailing team pulls its goalie late, and plenty of one-goal games end as two-goal wins.
How a day plays out
Open the matchup
One real NHL game from earlier in the season, the same one for every player, with both teams' records as they stood that day. The result stays hidden — the point is your read, not your homework.
Make three predictions
Three guesses per number. After each one you're told whether the answer is higher or lower, so a miss still tells you something and you can close in.
Get scored against the close
When you finish, each number is scored 0–100 on how close you landed to where the market closed before the game. Your day's score is the average of the three.
Why you're scored against the closing number
Hockey results are some of the noisiest in sport. A deflection, a hot goalie or a shootout can decide a game one team controlled, so the final score is a poor measure of whose read was right.
The number the market settled on right before puck drop is the best public estimate of the matchup: the starting goalies, back-to-backs and travel are all in it. Scoring against it rewards a good read even when the puck bounced the wrong way.
It also makes the NHL a test of fine margins. With totals this tight and so many games decided by one goal, half a goal on the total or a few points on the win chance is the difference between a good read and an average one.

NHL prediction game FAQ
What is the daily NHL prediction game?
It is a free once-a-day hockey game. You get one real NHL matchup from earlier in the season, with the result hidden, and predict three numbers about it — the projected goal total, the home team's chance to win, and the chance the favorite covers the puck line. Every player gets the same matchup, with three guesses per number and a higher-or-lower hint after each.
Is this sports betting?
No. There is no wagering, no deposit, and nothing to win but bragging rights. You are predicting numbers about a game that has already been played, to test how well you read it. You cannot win or lose money.
What is the puck line in the NHL game?
It is a fixed 1.5-goal margin, the same in every game. The question is always how likely the favorite was to win by two or more goals. Because it never changes, it is the market where your reads improve fastest over a season.
How many goals should I guess?
The slider runs 4.5 to 8 goals in half-goal steps, and nearly every game closes at 6 or 6.5. Only the exact number counts as nailed, so the question is which way this game leans: two strong goalies pull it toward 5.5, a backup in net or two fast offenses push it toward 6.5 or 7.
How is my NHL score calculated?
Each of the three numbers is scored 0 to 100 on how close it lands to the closing number, and your day's score is the average of the three. Nailing a number on your first guess scores more than getting there on your third.
Do I need an account to play?
No. You can play as a guest straight away. Creating an account saves your history and streak across devices, and your guest progress carries over when you sign in.
Can I play yesterday's NHL game?
Yes, if it's recent: today and the 2 days before it stay open to everyone. Daily Plus opens the full archive of past slates, lets you play every league on the same day instead of one, and includes a streak repair each week.
